How Often Should You Have Your Brakes Checked?
There is no specific formula for how often you should have brakes checked since there are numerous variables to consider. A good rule of thumb, however, is to have them checked at least twice a year. Most vehicle maintenance schedules provide for periodic brake inspection, but brake wear can vary drastically from driver to driver and depends on your environment. Under normal driving conditions, today’s brake materials can last tens of thousands of miles. However, if you drive a large SUV, truck or heavy car, your brakes will work harder than normal. Also, if you live in a hilly area, you will likely have reduced brake life.
Reminders to Get Your Brakes Checked
Get your brakes checked as soon as possible if you experience any of the following when applying the brakes:
- You hear a squealing or whining
- You feel a slight grinding
- Your brake pedal feels “spongy” or pushes farther toward the floor than normal
- A brake warning light illuminates
- You feel a pulsation or pulling to one side when braking
How Much Will Brake Repair Cost?
Brake repair costs can vary depending on the make of your vehicle and the amount of wear on the brakes. Typically, when replacing the friction material (pads or shoes), the rotors or drums will also be resurfaced to give the new material a smooth and even surface to break in. In the case of a badly worn rotor or drum, it may need to be replaced. The costs of the replacement materials will vary as well. Different compounds such as semi-metallic, organic or ceramic have varying characteristics, and your manufacturer may specify what is recommended for your vehicle.
